The PADI Open Water Dive Course, or Learn to Dive Course is your first step towards a lifetime of adventure and fun. This course teaches you all you need to know to get into the water and start diving in a safe and, above all, fun environment.
During the course you will learn the skills and knowledge to scuba dive to a depth of 18m and upon complete obtain a lifelong certification recognised across the entire globe.
Please be aware that the minimum age to complete a Learn to Dive course in Australia is 12 years old.
This Open Water Course is split into three main components run over two weekends.
1. Knowledge Development (Online Study) - Learn comfortably at home
2. Pool Session - Confined water training to teaching you skills in a safe environment
3. Ocean Dives - Consisting of two shore dives and two boat dives
1. Knowledge Development
Complete all your knowledge development at home with PADI’s online eLearning. This can be completed using phones/tablets with PADI's App, or on laptop/desktop online.
2. Pool Dives
Take your first breaths underwater, and learn the basic skills you need to be a confident scuba diver in a safe and comfortable environment. Conducted at one of the pools in the Hobart area.
3. Ocean Dives
Your four ocean dives take place on Tasmania’s beautiful east coast which is world renowned for its temperate water diving. Stay at our comfortable accommodation for the weekend while you apply the skills you learnt in the pool to real ocean scuba diving. Explore the wonders of the sea at some of Tasmania’s best dive sites.

Recreational Diving Medical Requirements – Go Dive Tasmania
To make things easier for you, please see the links below for the recreational diving medical forms.
Go Dive Tasmania requires a diving medical in the following cases:
- You answer “Yes” to any medical question and are prompted to see a doctor.
- You are 45 years or older.
If this applies to you, you must complete the medical before booking your course.
PADI Dive Medical*
- Can be completed by any willing GP.
- When booking your appointment, ask for a recreational diving medical.
- Not all GPs are familiar or willing to do this — check ahead of time.
- Bring a printed copy of the form to your appointment.
- All doctors listed below are known to offer this service in Tasmania.

Go Dive Tasmania – Booking Conditions
By booking any activity with Go Dive Tasmania, you acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions. Please read carefully before making your booking.
1. General Conditions
- All participants must complete an information and liability waiver prior to the activity. Completion is mandatory — no exceptions.
- You are responsible for booking an activity suitable to your certification level and confirming you are medically fit to participate.
- All courses and activities are conducted in English only. For safety reasons, translation is not permitted.
- Go Dive Tasmania reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any activity due to weather, safety concerns, instructor availability, minimum numbers, or other operational reasons.
3. Course Booking Conditions
Eligibility
- Minimum age: 12 years (8 years for Bubble Makers or Seal Team programs).
- Participants must have their own transport between dive shop, pool, lodge, and dive sites. Go Dive does not provide transfers.
- Many sites are in National Parks. A valid Parks Pass may be required: https://passes.parks.tas.gov.au
Medical & Swim Requirements
- A completed medical questionnaire is required. If indicated, doctor clearance must be provided.
- Divers aged 45 years or older must provide a dive medical from a doctor.
- You must be able to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes unassisted.
- Swim tests are conducted on Day 1. Failure to pass will result in course cancellation without refund.
- Failure to bring swim gear will be treated as a no-show.
- Re-testing may be arranged at $150 per hour, minimum 1 hour, calculated from staff departure/return to Hobart.
Payments, Refunds & Rebooking
- A non-refundable deposit of $245 per person applies to all course bookings.
- Cancellations more than 30 days prior: Partial refund (course fee less $245 deposit).
Example: $645 course – $245 deposit = $400 refund. - Cancellations within 14 days: No refund.
- Medical refunds: If you fail a dive medical and provide documentation to info@godivetassie.com.au, a refund will be issued less the $245 deposit.
- Refunds are made to the original payment method and may take up to 10 business days to process.
Combo Course Refunds
- If downgrading a Combo Course to fewer participants, refund is based on the difference in value, less the $245 deposit.
Example: $1999 (4-person) – $1575 (3-person) = $424.
Less $245 deposit = $179 refund. - No refunds for Combo Courses cancelled within 14 days of the start date.
Date Changes & No-Shows
- More than 14 days before start date: One free date change allowed.
- Within 14 days: One date change allowed with a $245 rebooking fee per person.
- After one date change (free or paid), any further changes require full re-payment of the course.
- Not attending or not completing a course incurs a $245 rebooking fee (valid once within 12 months). After that, full course payment is required.
- Arriving more than 30 minutes late may be treated as a no-show at Go Dive’s discretion.
Course Access & Communication
- After booking, you will be contacted with course details and access to PADI eLearning.
- If you do not receive this, it is your responsibility to contact us. Please check spam/junk folders.
- Completion of online learning prior to the course is mandatory. Failure to complete may result in exclusion from practical sessions without refund.
- Waiver and participant forms must be submitted before the start date.
4. Gift Vouchers – “Buy Now, Choose Dates Later”
- Valid for 3 years from purchase date.
- Treated as a gift voucher. To redeem, you must provide the original receipt.
- Vouchers are not redeemable for cash.
- Dates must be selected from those listed online; custom dates are not included.
